Lets see, Fallout 4 reveal trailer showing up last week, a F4 gameplay trailer presented in E3 and the Bethesda F4 press conference...
There sure is a lot of fresh talk, hopes and hype (as well as concerns) about the upcoming sequel and where it's taking the series.

This calls for a dedicated Fallout thread. We had one already way back, though that got wiped out along with everything else in the great Skullheart purge of 2013.
You could say this thread is...
    ... post-apocalyptic, HAHA!-hahaha... -ha?

To kick things of, I'm sure Skullheart has a lot of opinions on what was revealed about F4 within the last week in the trailers and conference.
What made you cheer and look forward to the brave new world?
What made you boo and hug your old Fallout CDs?

    Copied from a different thread:

Oh and yeah FO4 announce is awesome. Just have one thing that REALLY bothered me in the demo.

In FO3 you're parents look into a monitor to see what you look like in the future.

In FO NV after you get shot in the face, the doctor attempts to make your face as normal as possible. Which is valid why skin and hair alternations happens in front of him. Since he's the one technically changing your face.

But in FO4, YOU'RE CHANGING YOUR FACE IN FRONT OF A MIRROR, RIGHT NEXT TO YOUR WIFE! IN REAL TIME!

It's weird because the wife will be all like, "oh honey how come your face black all of sudden?"

IT'S WEIRD! Stupid thing to get bothered by I know.

I'm playing through NV right now and I'm doing a lot, but I still feel like I'm missing everything. There's so much stuff in this game.

I'll go ahead and give 3 things I very much like in F4 material so far, and 3 things I very much don't like.
    ________________________

+ Graphics. Obviously the game world looks great and has that next gen feel. The super colorful pre-war is pretty amusing and provides a nice contrast to what will be the present as well.

+ VATS slows down time rather than stopping it altogether. Looks neat, though probably still slows it down too much to make VATS challenging and actually fun.

+ Power armor. The thing about power armor in F1/F2 is that it made you look (and feel) like a walking mountain. Cheesy? Maybe, but there was a certain power to it. In F3/NV, while the designs were nice, it just looked so small, more clunky than intimidating. That said, PA in F4 is BIG, and that's great!
    ________________________

    - Voiced protagonist. Doesn't have to be a bad thing if done right - Planescape Torment had the Nameless One voiced, but since he was voiced only for some lines (mostly orders), one could imagine what tone he's using during certain lines, which might change depending on what kind character the player was roleplaying.

The same "sure, I just want to help you!" line might be imagined as read in a positive voice by a goody-two-shoes, in an ironic tone by a mercenary who's just in for the loot, and with a sly and dark undertone by someone who actually plans to screw the NPC up. Here, that's taken away from us, and that makes me sad. But not as sad as the...

    - Dialogue system. HNNNNG!! Really not a fan of picking options out of "happy/sad/hungry/fart" and learning what line my character says AFTER I make the decision. Between these two, immersive roleplaying in dialogue is pretty dead, and that's not what I want out of my Fallouts. <hugs CDs>

    - Super Mutants and Brotherhood. Been there, done that, far too many times already. I'd rather we had new things instead of reusing old things over and over in settings that don't make much sense of having said old things. Both of those factions have one specific distant source and they felt already very forced to have around in F3, where the Capital Wasteland was waaays from it (experimental vault that really stretches F1/F2 lore isn't enough to be ok with it, "rogue chapter of the Brotherhood on a throwaway mission" has been already played to death, and hey, the Enclave is here too, in legions at that, how convenient and not in conflict with its destruction at all).

New Vegas did it right, with having old factions but in a way where they clearly (d)evolve: the Brotherhood was small, damaged and dying, super mutants were few, old and often senile, and the Enclave was little more than a memory of the past. If F4 really NEEDS to reuse these old factions (which it doesn't but is doing anyway), I really wish there is a good reason/development with them - but how it was done in F3 doesn't exactly give me hope.

Since it's located in Boston, which is home for the Commonwealth and the Institute mentioned in Fallout 3, I'm guessing synths is short/slang for synthetic humans - androids.

Was looking dearly forward to the E3 showcase. Did not disappoint in the very least. (Besides the fact that I never had the chance for dat Power Armor plushie T_T)

I admit I was iffy towards the concept of a voiced protagonist after watching the original teaser but from the looks of things, Bethesda seems to know what they are doing so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. They are definitely shifting the mood of the game away from the originals though.

That said I never really made a full completion any of the games, finishing merely the main storyline of F3 on consoles and currently halfway through F1. I was hoping to change that fact by picking up a deep discount on the complete editions this Summer Sale and with any indication by the recent events that decision would have certainly been cemented.

If there isnt an option at turning off voiced protag im not buying at launch.
The fact that they did this just makes me think that they didn't want to write as many dialog options as the last game and so they could attract the Cahlahdooty and Mass Effect audience.

Im waiting for silent protag mod about a week after launch, to be honest I feel cheated out of my new Fallout game.

Here I am thinking voiced protagonist worked for Saints Row. Still had lots of personality, customization, and control. My green large-breasted abomination of a president felt like my green large-breasted abomination of a president, goddammit.

I'm a bit concerned about the SPECIAL points- all stats start at 1, and you get 21 to divvy up? That means an average score of 4 out of 10 for everything. This seems... weak.

I also worry about how they're going to handle "My parents Everything I knew is DEAD." The charming thing about Fallout is that it's post-post apocalyptic. It's in the "Rebuilding, things are gradually getting better" phase of Armageddon. New Vegas captured this well; I still need to play 1 and 2. FO3? Not so much, but that was Washington D.C., it would be more heavily hit. Dead baby drama doesn't exactly scream "keep it light."

Although... why would the devs go to all the trouble of custom baby making just to nuke it in the first five minutes? inb4 dead baby for main antagonist

I'm looking forward to how the issue of losing loved ones will be handled. Being a tabula rasa works for creating whoever we want, but a well handled tragic past of a character can work as spice for an RPG as well (again, nods to Planescape: Torment), and Bethesda already decided to define the character with a voice so it won't be a blank card anyway.
This might be returning to the roots as I'd say Fallout 1 is generally a downer. I don't want to go into details given that you didn't play it, though then one can avoid spoilers for a 18 year old Fallout game in a Fallout thread for only so long.
    Suddenly, Binding of Isaac flashbacks.

I need to get back into FO NV

I took a long hiatus from my first playthrough when the game crashed several times in row near the Brotherhood of Steel station.

I also need to finish FO1 and FO2 (and tactics) but I cant because my computer shat the bed and died.

That's okay, I like spoilers... and thought I was sufficiently spoiled already? Oh, well, pop-cultural osmosis can't convey everything...

    Other uses for custom baby:
    • Flashbacks/hallucinations
    • Replicant. This is the home of the Institute, after all, and "robot replica of pre-disaster home to lure you into a trap" seems like a pretty standard move. Especially if the Enclave's back and trying to recreate pre-War America anyway...
One cool thing about the pre-War protagonist: We finally get someone who might conceivably be pro-Enclave. Which'll be interesting.

Honestly, I'm looking forward to fallout 4 and I know it's going to be different than the other fallouts, but I guess we need to get used to that. A lot of things have changed, but that's cool!!

I'm just really upset that the brotherhood is returning, I understand that they have a major role in lore but it's still rather???? old???? I'd love to see some new factions, like they did in NV. But I guess Bethesda knows what they're doing. I'm crossing my fingers for some Enclave too.

And since it's taking place in the commonwealth, I hope we get a cool android companion, or even get to turn into a cyborg ourselves. Like, remember the cyborg perk in fallout 3? Would be cool if they fleshed it out a bit more in Fallout 4.

For some reason I don't like it that the protagonist has a voice, but on the other side it's something totally new!! I've heard that there is like 2 years worth of dialogue, which sound amazing!! It also adds a bunch of personality to your character.

I can't wait for Dad simulator: The game

We have character creation power over mom and dad, and sorta decide which survives out of the two survives and is our protagonist.
I think I prefer that over what was in F3/Vegas. A special device for it was a cool gimmick and everything, but I was always a bit annoyed that the computer screen filter and odd lightning always made my character a bit different shades of skin/hair in-game than how it looked on the screen.
In that case, the ending of Fallout 1 is pretty much:
    Show Spoiler
Thank you for saving the world, hero! Now GTFO.

All that time roaming an unfamiliar, hostile wasteland and constantly risking your life to save your dear family, home and friends, only so that once all is done, you hear from the prick overseer that you changed too much and would be a bad influence on the community as a whole, and are therefore banished to spend the rest of your life out there. As far as endings go, this one is pretty bleak.
Interesting point. For everyone else the Enclave was a bunch of ancients that want to fuck everything up for everyone for no reason. For a pre-war protagonist though, they may be the beloved defenders of the nation.

This might work both ways, too. With the Enclave obsession over purity, a wastelander joining them was never an option. A pre-war citizen fresh out of stasis might just maybe possibly pass their strict requirements, though. Then again the Enclave was known to be dicks to vault dwellers before, so you never know with them.
Didn't hear that bit. What exactly was said on removing skills?

    NO SKILLS!?!??!?!!?

That's terrifying! I loved skill points! Allocating stats and skill points gave everything a nice D&D feel! Hell, the main reason I haven't gotten into the Elder Scrolls games is the grindy way they do skills instead of Fallout. I was already planning a high INT/STR/AGL Batman build, even...

No, they sell them to you. By infinite, I meant they sell them in very HUGE quantities. IIRC they have over 1000 energy cells for sale and 700 microfusion cells etc. And they somewhere restock that amount every next week?

  35. Fallout New Vegas was created by Obsidian Entertainment, not Bethesda.

Things like Supermutants, BOS, and FEV in the east is old news and Bethesda potentially scrapping skills isn’t surprising. Bethesda has focused more on integrating memes, items, factions, and characters that have become more broadly associated with Fallout outside the original fan base. More people have heard about and want to interact with the Brotherhood of Steel than have played FO1 or 2, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Bethesda wants to keep them around.

But wouldn't that sort of make the Fallout world bland?
Also, couldn't they just implement The Great Khans? Wasn't their faction destroyed constantly so they had to keep migrating elsewhere? Why not implement them as ye olde raiders or something near Boston?

    Nope.

Which is only a logical decision from Mr House. The Brotherhood doesn't exactly have any history of cooperating with someone with technology, much less accepting their rule. It's either "hand it over", "WAR" or "temporary truce - until we can afford WAR".

Were the Brotherhood allowed to survive and eventually rebuild, them revolting against Mr House would be a matter of "when", not "if".

You sound like you're a reincarnation of Mr.House.
Also, am I the only one who felt good after destroying the Brotherhood's bunker?

  39. There’s a mod you can get that lets you talk him in to sparing them. Don’t remember how good the reasoning presented was, but I always wanted to manipulate them in to striking against the NCR and using them as a convenient patsy/scapegoat for any action Vegas may want to take against the NCR.

Also think Project Nevada lets you disable slow-mo kills do other things with AP aside from VATS like bullet time and sprinting. I remember you saying something about that in an other thread.

There was a push within Bethesda to make Oblivion and Cyrodiil more generic or “normal” than what was seen in the last two TES games in an effort to make the series more marketable and Oblivion was considerably more successful than Morrowind.

The great Khans would have to move quite a ways to make it to Boston, but it wouldn’t surprise me too much if they showed up anyway as bunch of random thugs. However, they aren’t nearly as well known as the Enclave or BOS.
