I've been enjoying it thus far. The last mission is the biggest challenge in all of Metal Slug history.

A guy who speed ran both this and Contra 3 said this is ten times harder lol. It's actually pretty legendary in terms of run and gun shooter difficulty.

Anyway so far I'm able to clear the second stage and make it midway through stage 3 pretty consistently. Still trying to get down speed killing the Monoeyes (lure one doctor zombie across the arena, let him zombie you, kill him, vomit twice on the bosses to kill most of them than grab the pills he dropped).

If anyone wants to aid me in my magical journey let me know lol.

For some reason Steam's search can't find your profile. Send one to mine or link me and I'll add you.

I got homework to do now, but I'll be up for it later.

And it only took 12 hours of gameplay.

Also I posted a review in hopes of other people seeing. It's a bit rambly but that's kinda my style.

Metal Slug 3 is the best, period. I like Metal Slug X too, but all games are very entertaining and fun to play. I love the random stuff they throw at you sometimes lol

My predilect characters: Tarma and Fio.

This game and Ghouls and Ghosts are the best in terms of handling RNG/reaction based elements well.

For stage 3 I went for the submarine to get through it faster and safer. For stage 4 I went for the underground fungus route since it's incredibly safe and easy if you know how to keep the drill slug alive, and you get Laser x2 for 400 ammo against the boss.

Grenades provide a large burst of damage that doesn't require you to be directly in front of the target. If you save them, they are also useful in making heavily-armored enemies pushovers. Once you become skilled at Metal Slug, you will be dying less often, and conserving your grenades for enemies that take a lot of hits.

They're also pretty useful to cover that nasty up-diagonal angle, or to cover ground and air at the same time (in mission 4 for example, where you might want to always fire in front of you and behind to keep the soldiers at bay, and use your grenades to make short work of the choppers).
During certain bosses, it is interesting to keep a few grenades as a protection against missiles or other "destructible bullets" (like 3rd stage boss for example), in any case they would get in by that nasty up-diagonal angle and close your options.

Grenades are interesting also because their use is different in each situation. At times you'll want to hold on to them to use like a "bomb" in a shmup, wiping everything out when you feel pressured. At other times you'll get a restock soon and it becomes vital to basically spam them on everything in your path to get through (stage 4, for example).

But yeah they are spike damage and do crazy damage.

Rule one in Metal Slug. Every time you respawn on a boss, spam all your grenades on them. If you're a pro, pistol them to death.

So besides a few case scenarios where bullets just cant cut it, theyre pretty much what i was thinking. I dont rly have that much experience with this series in particular but i played a lot of Alien Hominid when i was younger which is rather similar but probably easier.

I think I can confirm that co op is actually harder than single player in Metal Slug 3. I'm not 100% certain, but it seems bosses get a reasonably decent hp buff when you have 2 players on the field (even with full weapons and my usual route, some of them seem take waaay longer in co op), and any boss attack that's aimed is a brutal since they seem to flip a coin to determine which player to aim at, which can be a nightmare for certain bosses if you don't coordinate to a pretty extreme degree.

On a side note, at first I didn't like the idea that you couldn't adjust the number of credits available, but I actually really like the set up here for co op. You have just enough that you can almost always get in a full playthrough so long as you don't royally screw up, but not too many that you don't have to pay attention. Not to mention you can keep tracking how you and your partner do each play time, always aiming for a better run each time.

I'd really like to try something like that for some other arcade games some time. Maybe some beat em ups and shmups and other run and gun shooters. Anybody let me know if you ever wanna try, I bet it would be fun to try and master some of these old games in that manner.

XX is a remake of Metal Slug 7 that added Leona. X is a (much older) remake of Metal Slug 2 that removed the slowdown that bogged down the game, added more weapons, and heavily tweaked the level design.

Some people prefer Metal Slug 2 over X, depends on your taste in level design. I have mostly found X preferable myself.

Well, it's a little difficult, but I'll give it a shot.

There's the original, which was first released on NeoGeo in 1996, but got ported to various other platforms, including Saturn, the original PlayStation. Had only two playable characters (Marco and Tarma), determined by whether you were Player 1 (Marco) or 2 (Tarma).

Next came the second game, two years later, which added Eri and Fio, character transformations and additional vehicles and power-ups. This was later remade into Metal Slug X the following year, which appears to be more popular than 2, at least in my experience. Metal Slug X is the game that's coming to Steam next month.

Then there was Metal Slug 3 in 2000, which appears to be one of the most popular games of the series. It was also the last Metal Slug made by the original SNK before they went bankrupt, which is probably why just like KoF 2000, it's among the most popular games in the series. Same 4 characters as 2/X, but it added in branching paths in stages, increasing the game's replay value. This was the game previously released on Steam earlier this year.

Metal Slug 4 came next in 2002, after SNK's bankruptcy. It was developed by Mega Enterprises, a Korean company. This is similar to the cases of KoF 2001 and 2002, which were developed by another Korean company, Eolith. It replaced Tarma and Eri with two new characters, Trevor and Nadia. I'll be honest I didn't play much of this one, but I've heard it's not too popular. It was published by Playmore before they rebranded themselves as "SNK Playmore".

Metal Slug 5 was the last game in the series to be released on the NeoGeo MVS arcade hardware. Noise Factory and the newly-rechristened SNK Playmore took over development on this game. Eri and Tarma came back, and it was generally considered an improvement over 4. Once again, I have very little experience with this one.

Metal Slug 6 came out on Atomiswave (much like KoF NeoWave and XI) in 2006. It added in Ralf Jones and Clark Still from KoF/Ikari Warriors as playable characters and they each had a special move from KoF (Ralf has Vulcan Punch while Clark had his Argentina Back Breaker). Didn't play too much of this one, but what I did play was fun.

Finally, in the main series, there's Metal Slug 7, originally released on the Nintendo DS. This was later remade and upscaled into Metal Slug XX for XBLA and PSP. The main game included the entire MS6 cast, but XX added Leona Heidern (Ralf and Clark's teammate from KoF since 1996) as a DLC character. Never played this one, but I'd love to see XX get ported to Steam.

Then you've got the spinoffs. There were two games on SNK's handheld, the NeoGeo Pocket Color, respectively Metal Slug 1st Mission and 2nd Mission. The games weren't bad given their technical limitations. Metal Slug Advance was a unique game made for the Game Boy Advance (never played it). There was also an exclusive game for the PS2, simply titled "Metal Slug" which turned the game into a 3D shooter. Never played that, but it didn't look so good. There's also a tower defense spinoff on iOS and Android phones called Metal Slug Defense, which recycles a whole lot of graphics from the 2D games. It's pretty fun as far as timewasters go.

tl;dr: There are 7 mainline Metal Slug games, 2 remakes (2 > X, 7 > XX) which are generally considered improvements, 3 spinoffs that played like the main games and 2 others that occupy different genres (3D shooter and tower defense, respectively).
