TBH, I liked how Black and White 1 locked out previous gens BEFORE you beat the Elite 4. We all know "those fans" would pick a random starter, BS their way to the nearest transfer stations, and then proceed to add all their old pokemon because they wouldn't give the gen 5 pokemon a chance. I am glad they locked it. it felt like an actual brand new adventure. I didn't look into what pokemon were going to be in the game, so I was always guessing what pokemon I would find and what team I would eventually make.

I felt the same way playing Black and White 1. Seeing all these new designs and not constantly thinking "Where do I find <insert Gen 1 or 2 Pokemon> in this game? I always use <insert same Pokemon>!" was refreshing.

The main problem with this is that there are only 151 or fewer pokemon per region, including legendaries. When you go from trainer battle to trainer battle seeing the same pokemon consistantly it gets boring a lot faster than it should. Do you know how many pan monkey teams were in BW? A FREAKING LOT. It also slows the pace for new pokemon to be introduced, and hampers the evil teams/ gyms. Team Plasma's favorite pokemon was stupid Watchog, which they were STILL using in the late game, a pokemon I don't want to see hardly at all after the 2nd gym. Worst yet, the dragon gym used only 5 different pokemon, 3 of which were from the same evolutionary line. Now imagine a dragon gym that has everything from Dragonite to Hydreigon. Sure, BW2 doesn't actually have this, but it has a hell of a lot more diversity in it's dragon gym. Most importantly though, 151 pokemon is, personally, not enough to choose from. Sure, I like more than 6 Unova pokemon, but that doesn't mean I want to use 6 of them at once. Probably my favorite part about BW2 is that you had around 300 pokemon to choose from, leading to some crazy diverse teams and plenty of pokemon scattered in each area. For example, my Black 2 team was Samurott, Accelgor, Flygon, Skarmory, Magmortar, and Zoroark. I don't know about you, but that's one of most diverse and weirdly picked Pokemon teams I've ever had, or seen for that matter, but that's what's so great about it. And a crazy team like this is just one of the ridiculous possibilities I could have chosen. And note that 3 of my pokemon are unova pokemon, so don't get the idea that I just have some innate hate for them, or simply don't want to use them.

Do you even remember how it was like in gen 1?! remember how team rocket loved zubat and rattata? there was 150 pokemon in gen 1 and no one complained about fighting the same pokemon against multiple trainers! why is it such a big deal with this one?

    [EDIT]

And I'm just gonna add more to this. Nearly all of the Gen 1 gyms only had small amounts of pokemon many of which being from the same evolutionary line. NO ONE COMPLAINED.

BW1 gave many players the feeling of playing pokemon for the first time without wallowing in nostalgia. It allowed them to give new pokemon a chance and make their decision about whether or not the player will use them until AFTER they beat the game. So what if the dragon gym didn't have that much? it was all the new dragons! remember how the psychic gym in gen 1 had mostly Abra's evolutions over and over? no one complained.

You have a good point, but I complain less about Gen 1 only because it was so novel at that point, and there only were 151 pokemon. And I guess I'm a little biased by my love of gen 1 as well. Nonetheless, with there being over 600 pokemon available now, there is no excuse for limiting us. Obviously I don't want or need all 600-whatever in a single main game, but the standard set by BW2 for around 300 available at once was really impressive. As for gyms in Gen 1, I again give them a pass because they didn't fuck around with difficulty in the gen 1 games. Personally I played Yellow, so I can't speak for Blue or Red, but in Yellow the gyms were really difficult, so I wasn't attracted to the lack of diversity, I was just trying to beat the damn thing. And I loved it. The craziest examples are trying to pit a Pikachu vs a Geodude and Onix at the first gym, and the huge level jump between the 4th and 5th gym-from Erika's level 32 Gloom to Koga's level 50 Venomoth. Nonetheless I do still admit you have a point in this regard and if the games were released today I would definitely be more critical of them(that is to say, released at a point with 600+ pokemon.)

please take a note from JuJu for president. the reason they did it was to give the new pokemon an actual chance of being used, rather than overly biased early generation fans a hindrance before they could get their "OG team" and the reason those games were harder was because they were clunky, and it took forever to most of the stuff in the game. gen 5 also introduced the streamlined item management and that instantaneously won me over. it not only made me feel like I was playing pokemon for the first time, it felt like pokemon from my childhood got a makeover and got its act together.

Now, Gen 6 is introducing another type that will level the playing field against many pokemon that are overpowered and way too accessible. and lets not forget mega-evolutions. and already people are being judgemental over something they know little to nothing about. The fans need to stop demanding what they think is best and let Gamefreak decide on whats best.

Well see, I understand that they want the new pokemon to get use. But if that hinders the game as a whole, I don't care. And to avoid the problem of people just using a bunch of pokemon from their favorite gen, you add a lot of pokemon from every gen. So in XY, I expect to see Pokemon from gens 1-4 and 6 in the main game, and pokemon from gen 5 and some of the leftovers in 1-4 in the post game. If they have say, 50 pokemon from each of the first gens on top of the 100-150 from gen 6, things will be much better than just gen 6 pokemon. Though based on trailers I don't think I'll have to worry about this.(DON'T TELL ME IF I DO THOUGH!)
As for your ideas about difficulty, perhaps you're right, but that doesn't mean I don't want XY to be difficult, in fact I'm really hoping for the continuation of challenge mode(though this time I'd like to have it unlocked from the start). Seeing it be a 1 game thing will be a major dissapointment.

Kinda off-topic, but at some point, I think I would like to see a Pokemon with some kind of "Hard Mode" option for the main game (i.e. non-online play) where trainers have the sense to catch more than 2 Pokemon before challenging the player.

It might be hard to balance, and we do already have Nuzlock runs, but it is a pet-peeve of mine to see members of the Elite-Freaking-Four only use 5 Pokemon the first time you face them.

Since gen 3, pokemon has always added the challenge mode, whether it be past gym leaders, battle frontier, or whatever else. I'm sure the challenge mode will be there.

but challenge mode should remain THE REWARD for beating the game all the way through. If poeple want an added challenge to their Pokemon games they can take on the Nuzlocke challenge.

I for one am all for Pokemon remaining at the difficulty it retains today. I would never want any of the new generations of pokemon fans to be turned away solely because the previous ones want more challenge. Pokemon needs to be for everyone.

well, the Elite 4 obtained more pokemon after the main game in gen 5, so it would be nice to have a harder mode for after beating them the first time. and it could be done considering that the 3DS can have more memory to allow this.

I think I would prefer to have it as an option from the beginning. I personally dislike unlocking difficulties by beating a game, as it usually feels kind of pointless to start the game right back from the beginning again, but harder this time.

Still, I don't think I would mind too much if they did it that way. A mode like this would certainly make the rival battles more deserving of their amazing background music:

Additional tougher fights is not what I call a hard mode. Toughening up trainers and especially bosses AI and level-wise throughout the entirety of the main and post game, is. And I wouldn't mind going through the game again on challenge mode after beating the game the first time, but problem is, Pokemon only gives you 1 file. And Pokemon isn't the type of game where they can just add files easily. Even worse, your keys were linked to your save file, so the only way to play challenge mode in the main game was to get the key from someone else; if you erased your save file after beating the game just to play challenge mode, you would also end up erasing your challenge mode key.

As for keeping the game accessible for new fans, I do not want the games to just raise the difficulty for everyone; simply having the option, when making a new file, to go with a Normal or Hard Mode would please both parties.

I am a bit more conservative when it comes to pokemon I guess. Theere hasnt been a need to put in a hard mode and I dont see a reason to put one in now.

plus, adding a hard mode would make having tournaments more complicated, like, would you have different levels of tournaments for the diffuculty levels, would they all be the same?

I think, that if Pokemon were to have a hard mode, it should be like, theres a timeskip and you do everything all over again or something like that. I would just prefer the hard mode to be built into the story rather than it being an option.

So long as the difficulty setting only directly affects the single-player gameplay, the only real complication that could arise from the setting is if it includes buffed wild Pokemon (since buffed trainers wouldn't really benefit the player more than regular trainers would), and even if the wild Pokemon you could catch in Hard Mode were inherently better, most tournament Pokemon don't come straight from the wild (besides maybe Legendaries), but rather a ridiculous amount of breeding, which would be the same between both modes.

again, I think it would be best for the hard mode to be unlocked and added as a story.

like, you have to eventually level your pokemon to 100 and fight a lot of trainers with 100s. I wouldn't mind that.

I do see the benefit of making a Hard Mode a post-story unlockable, but I feel it sort of misses the point of having a harder difficulty. I don't want a harder difficulty just to have some harder fights, as those can easily be obtained through online play (those freaking Lvl 100 Magikarps <shivers>). Rather, I want there to be a harder difficulty to make the journey to becoming the champion of the region more fulfilling. Is it really a surprise that you became the champion of the Unova region when the Elite Four each used 5 Pokemon instead of 6? (sorry, it really is a pet-peeve :p)

Um, this makes no sense. In hard mode Pokemon are not inherently superior stat-wise, the only differences are trainers have higher level pokemon, better AI, and bosses specifically have more pokemon on their team. Pokemon with inherently better stats due to hard mode would be unfair, and has, and never will happen.

I wish it was a forced nuzlocke/permadeath mode, that would be awesome.

Back in 1998 we also didn't have smartphones, but there's no way I'm not complaining if you take mine away and replace it with a brick.

Making a true nuzlocke mode in an official pokemon game(on top of making the game harder as in challenge mode) could make for a reasonable excuse for a second file. But it would have to be super hardcore about this nuzlocke thing. Like, if all your Pokemon die, your secondary nuzlocke game file is erased, or something ridiculous.(though people would just turn off the game before losing, ruining the spirit of it). And they could make it that any pokemon that survived the nuzlocke and were in your party when you beat the elite 4 get a special nuzlocke ribbon and then can be transferred to your main file. Of course only the main file could be used for multiplayer trading, battling, or whatever else.

Because Nintendo would not be fine with that. There's a reason they don't give you multiple files in Pokemon games. Some of the reason has to do with multiplayer stuff being complicated, and some of it has to do with total file size of the game, and some probably has to do with the idea of giving you 2 times through the game(and twice the legendaries) for the price of one. Nintendo would never be in support of this without major restrictions set on moving things from the Nuzlocke file to the main file.

But there needs to be some sort of system to keep the pokemon you nuzlocke'd. You're inevitably going to get attached to them, that's kind of the point.
Although I don't think they would let you catch legendaries in the first place. It's a freaking nuzlocke, that's cheating.
File size issues are solved via the 3ds SD card. Although it's pretty difficult to think of what they're doing that would make this an issue at all.
It would be okay to not have multiplayer battles as long as pokemon can transfer to the main file.

I'd love to see difficulty settings in Pokemon. Once you grow up with the series and understand what you're doing (EV training, understanding each Pokemon's abilities), the game gets a bit easy. I know the game has harder stuff after you beat the main story, but I have trouble caring about that as much as the journey itself.

As for mega evolutions, I don't mind them so much but I'd really prefer straight-up evolutions. It's a bit exciting to see who else will get buffed, though. I was super happy to see Mawile and Absol getting some love.

Are the new cries bothering anyone else? I understand the older generations had dated sound, but that's what makes them so appealing to listen to. I actually have favorite cries, and it's sad to think they'll never sound like that again...

I forget I have items 95% of the time. I actually have to remind myself, "Hey, you can use one of your 20 Super Potions instead of trekking all the way back to the Pokemon Center." It really does make you wonder how different the games would be if Pokemon Centers charged a fee. I've never really seen the amount of money I had all that important (except when I had to buy coins for TMs in the damn Game Corners).

I think the only time I ever use items during a trainer battle is against the Elite Four/Champion, but I try to do it sparingly because it feels like such a dick move.
